Reading
Reading
At Summerfield Primary, reading is at the heart of our curriculum.
In KS1, the children learn how to read using Read Write Inc (see the RWI phonics page).
In KS2, we study novels, non-fiction books and poetry in our reading sessions. We analyse the texts using VIPERS.
Competitions.
We will be restarting our Reading Competitions in the Spring Term. Details about this will be shared with children and parents shortly.
Author Visits
Tom Palmer visit to Year 5
In November, Year 5 had an amazing session with Tom Palmer, author of World War 1 & 2 themed fiction stories for KS2. He talked to Year 5 about his books and his passion for history as well as sport.
Each day (Mon-Wed) he released a chapter of a new story called the Barnbow Lasses based on a true event which happened in Leeds. Year 5 listened to the story and then did different activities each day based on their own opinions and what they liked about each section of the story.
On Thursday, Year 5 joined in with a virtual webinar where Tom spoke to all of the Leeds schools who had taken part in the project that week and he shared more about how he came to write the story.
We are really looking forward to reading more of Tom’s books!
World Book Day 2020
We had a fantastic day for World Book Day 2020. Every class, from Nursery to Year 6, studied and enjoyed the book 'Flotsam' and produced brilliant writing and art work to match.
All the children came to school in their pyjamas with their teddies and blankets for our 'Bedtime Story Session' at the end of the day. Every child in school enjoyed their favourite story while drinking hot chocolate and marshmallows.
