Statutory Assesment Information
Phonics Screening Check for Year 1 Pupils
The phonics screening check is taken individually by all children in Year 1 in England, and is usually taken in June. There are two sections and it is a 40-word check. It is designed to give teachers and parents information on how children are progressing in phonics and early reading skills and if any additional support is necessary at this stage. All words included in the check are phonetically de-codable ('Fred Talk') and a variety of pseudo-words (nonsense words) will also be included. Miss Rowley will be happy to answer any questions about the upcoming check.
Will my child be scored?
Children are not assessed as passing or failing - teachers are checking if appropriate progress is being made in phonics. If your child does not reach the required standard then this will be discussed with parents and appropriate intervention support will be put in place. Children can re-sit the test the following Summer term.
